Chase Elliott Looks for Second Straight Cup Victory at Road America

It appears Chase Elliot is about to regain his dominance on road courses. Coming off his second NASCAR Cup Series victory of the season last Sunday at Nashville Superspeedway, Elliott edged Chase Briscoe for the pole position during time trials for Sunday’s Kwik Trip 250 at Road America.

Trackhouse Racing’s Ross Chastain, and Daniel Suarez won the two first road course events of the year at Circuit of the Americas, and Sonoma Raceway. However, neither of them had an impressive qualifying run Saturday. Chastain will start 12th on Sunday and Suarez 17th.

That leaves the door open for Elliott, who has accumulated seven of his 15 Cup wins on road courses. Elliott ranks third in all-time road course victories, just behind Jeff Gordon (nine) and Tony Stewart (8).

Elliott is the defending winner at Road America, where the Cup Series ran last year for the first time since 1956.

Accordingly, we’re backing Elliott at +400 to become the first three-time winner in the Cup Series on Sunday.

Chase Briscoe has excellent speed in his No. 14 Stewart-Haas Ford

Already a winner this season, Chase Briscoe qualified second for Sunday’s Kwik Trip 250 and was sorely disappointed with his effort.

I did a horrible job after the time trials. My stance was much more sideways that straight. In different corners, I felt like I lost six-tenths of a point. The pole is definitely for my team, but not the driver. That needs to be rectified.

Should Elliott fail or experience an unforeseeable calamity we recommend Briscoe. At +800, the price is right for the 27-year-old from Indiana.

We urge you to place a bet that Michael McDowell will finish in the top three and five places at Sonoma’s road race. McDowell did both and came home in third place for a good payday.

Despite his road racing prowess, and despite a strong sixth-place qualifying effort on Saturday, McDowell is a +2000 long shot to win and +450 to finish in the top three at Road America.

We think the former Daytona 500 champion has the car to finish in the top three on Sunday, so we advise making that bet at +450. And as a companion to that wager, we like Denny Hamlin, who starts 14th, to run top-three at +525.
