On the 103rd episode of Wise Kracks, we welcome an unusual guest with a uniquely unusual past-time, a passionate tangent on pizza, and we discuss some stories from the world of sports too!
Bill Krackomberger and Jon Orlando dive into the controversy surrounding Zach Wilson’s personal life and whether the steamy affair will influence how people bet on the New York Jets.
They also discuss the upcoming Open Championship and the PGA Tour’s still-standing decision to suspend certain players over their participation with LIV Golf.
There’s an exciting UFC Fight Night coming down the pipeline with Brian Ortega taking on Yair Rodriguez in the main event. Who will take the victory? Bill and Jon take their picks.
Joining Jon and Bill is maybe one of their more unorthodox guests in McCovey Cove Dave, a San Francisco Giants fan that catches home runs from his kayak… we’ll explain more later. You’ll want to hear this one!
All Bets Are Off For Zach Wilson… Or Are They?
Selected second overall by the New York Jets in the 2021 NFL Draft, 22-year-old Zach Wilson has landed himself in hot water recently when it was brought to light that he was having an affair with one of his mom’s friends.
People across the internet, including teammate Mekhi Becton, have had their fun with the allegations, but Jon wants to know: will this story influence how people bet on the Jets?
Bill just hopes it won’t interfere with his game. “You have more pressure on you now, more spotlight on you… people have nothing to do, they want to find out about people’s personal private lives.”
Jon thinks irony will work in the Jets’ favor and would make him want to bet on the New York team even more.
Bill doesn’t know if irony will help them at all. “The Jets never seem to get there.” Even as someone who favors the underdog, Bill’s hopes aren’t as high as Jon and his vision of a miracle season for the Jumbo Jets.
Bill also takes the time to sympathize with Wilson, as he shares a story about how he was into one of his mom’s friends when he was younger, but we’ll leave it up to him to share that secret with you.
A Kayak Full of Baseballs
Our guest this week leads a very interesting life, such an interesting life that Bill simply refers to him as “a character”. That character is McCovey Cove Dave, a San Francisco Giants fan who has been to over 600 games… in a kayak.
Dave stakes his claim in the water surrounding Oracle Park, known as McCovey Cove, waiting for home run balls to come his way. He has a collection of well over 50 home run balls that were sent his way from the likes of José Altuve and David Ortiz, amongst others.
Dave has what games he attends down to a science, “It’s kind of like gambling, you put your best foot forward and take advantage of the odds. If the weather is too cold, the ball won’t come out. The weather has to be just right.” He also states his preference for right-handed pitchers.
Although kayaks are synonymous with leisure, Bill is still curious if there’s “etiquette” out on the water; does Dave have competition, or as the kids say, haters?
“There are no written rules,” Dave proclaims sternly. “We’re like crazed kids, we’re out to get that home run ball.”
He even recalls how he broke a rib after another kayak collided with him. Jon noted that “It’s a contact sport!”
Further discussing the season the Giants are having, Dave acknowledges that “They’re struggling to get a wild card position,” but the hopeful fan in him sees the potential in making the playoffs.
The interview is bookmarked with a peaceful agreement between, get this, a Dodgers fan and a Giants fan. Jon, Bill, and Dave all have their say as to whether or not Barry Bonds deserves to be in the Hall of Fame. We won’t spoil the answer, but Jon punctuates it by exclaiming, “Giants fans and Dodger fans can get along!”
